Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a 5000-year-old Chinese system of natural healing. This ancient healing
art does not use drugs or surgery to treat the body. Rather, fine sterile needles
are inserted into specific points of the body to restore a balanced flow of energy.
Heat and electrical stimulation may also be used in acupuncture treatment.
How does it work?
Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners believe that the human body has more
than 360 acupuncture points. These points connect with pathways called meridians.
The meridians conduct energy called Qi (pronounced "chee"), from the surface
of the body to the organs, glands, and tissues.
It is believed that when Qi is blocked, the flow of blood is slow. This can result
in pain or illness. When acupuncture needles are inserted, Qi is allowed to move
freely throughout the body. When Qi flows freely, Balance is achieved for body,
mind and spirit.
Acupuncture is believed to Balance Yin and Yang. These are terms used in Traditional
Chinese Medicine to express the Balance of all systems of the body and those throughout
the universe. When Yin and Yang are Balanced, they work together with the natural
flow of Qi to help the body achieve and maintain health and well being.
Why should I try acupuncture?
Acupuncture has been shown to promote health and improve the body's immune function.

What should I expect from my first visit?
Our acupuncturist will review your health history and work with you on a plan for
improving your health and well being. He or she will assess your health based on
a model of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This may include pulse diagnosis, and looking
at your tongue for color and coating. The acupuncturist will then show you which
points on your body need stimulation to Balance your Qi and restore your health.
You will then be ready for your first treatment.
The needles used in acupuncture are very fine, and you should feel only a slight
sensation. All needles are discarded after one use. It is possible to do acupuncture
without needles. Be sure to discuss any questions or concerns before you begin your
treatment.
How many treatment sessions should I expect to have?
Your acupuncturist will set up a treatment plan with you to achieve the Balance
your body needs. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, one course of treatment includes
approximately 10 sessions. In most cases at least one course is needed, particularly
with chronic conditions or serious injuries. Be sure to ask questions and voice
any concerns as you discuss your treatment plan with your acupuncturist.
Does insurance cover acupuncture?
Some extended health policies cover the expense for acupuncture treatment. It is
recommended that you check with your insurance company to determine policy coverage
before beginning treatment. More and more insurance companies are finding that acupuncture
is a cost effective treatment option.
